I think after the late 90's most new bands formed into cheap knock off bands which have poor songs that aren't that memorable.
There are the very few exceptions but the rest pretty much suck compare to the classic. Slipknot is a band i tried out, bought an album and its pure trash, i ended up returning it shortly after. Though Slipknot isn't the only i tried, i've listened to many other metal, nu-metal, punk and all i've noticed is its nothing more than poor whiny songs.
Most of which have horrible singers as well.
I'm very open on music, i normally listen to allot of different genres of music. But i think i will listen more to the older bands since it seems to days is nothing more than childish emo bands whining about misery and failing to imitate the viewers with adult content.
